Top universities in South Africa
The table above lists the top universities in South Africa in the latest QS World University Rankings.
University of Pretoria
South Africa’s University of Pretoria is one of the largest universities in the country, with over 52,000 students at seven campuses.
University of Johannesburg
The University of Johannesburg is one of the youngest universities in South Africa to feature in the QS World University Rankings, having been formed from a merger of earlier institutions as recently as 2005.
Stellenbosch University
Stellenbosch University was founded in 1918 and is located in the town of Stellenbosch, 50km east of Cape Town.
University of Witwatersrand
The University of Witwatersrand (often called Wits for short) has five campuses in urban and suburban Johannesburg, the country’s largest city. The university has around 39,950 students and, according to the university’s website, 97 percent of its students find employment within six months of completing their studies.

Ain Shams University is based in Cairo and was established in 1950. It is a very large institution, hosting approximately 180,000 students across 15 faculties.
American University in Cairo
The American University in Cairo teaches in English and possesses Egypt’s largest English-language library collection.
Cairo University
Despite the name, Cairo University's main campus is actually in Giza, 20km southwest across the Nile from Cairo.

Ethopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Sudan, Tunisia and Uganda are other countries in Africa to be represented in the QS World University Rankings at least once.
